Making Your Winter The Best It Can Be

Cold weather and less daylight during the winter months can cause us to experience the winter blues, or even, for some people, depression. Going through cancer treatment during the winter can make you feel even more isolated than normal. Finding a way to avoid the winter blues can be difficult, before seeking help it is important to know the signs and symptoms of winter depression.

Symptoms associated with winter depression include:

  • Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Altered sleep patterns
  • Decreased energy levels
  • Feelings of hopelessness

Some of these symptoms overlap with cancer treatment side effects, however if you identify with any of these symptoms, it’s important to reach out to a healthcare professional for support.

Self-care is essential during the winter months; taking steps to prevent feeling sad can help you get ahead of your symptoms.

Plan things to look forward to:

Plan fun activities and stick to them! Whether this means doing things alone or with people you enjoy being around, having fun things to do in the winter is a great way to get out of your winter funk. Schedule lunch with friends or read a new book; whatever joy means for you, try to find a way to incorporate it into your everyday life during the winter months. Even though winters in Pennsylvania can be cold and windy, it is still important to find joy in the cold.

Lean on people you love:

If you are struggling with your mental health during the winter months, it is essential to lean on the people you love. Knowing that there are people you can count on to help you through your emotions can lift a large weight off your shoulders. Your loved ones are there for you year-round while going through cancer treatment, communicate with them that you are in need of more support during the colder months.

Get moving:

Movement is also essential during the winter months. So many people hibernate when it gets colder outside, but getting outside or going to a workout class can be a big mood booster. You can make working out even more fun by getting your friends and family involved. Spend your time going on a hike or to a hot yoga class if you can’t stand the cold. The cold weather in Pennsylvania allows you to do fun activities outside, like ice skating!

Winter doesn’t have to be a season of gloom. By recognizing the signs of winter blues, planning enjoyable activities, leaning on your loved ones, and staying active, you can transform your “normal” winter into a transformative one.
