The Different Types of Doctors at PCSRI
Every year on March 30th, we celebrate the dedication, skill, and commitment of physicians by recognizing National Doctor Day. At PCSRI, we celebrate all our different types of doctors, including oncologists and hematologists. Oncologists and hematologists are both essential when it comes to cancer care at Pennsylvania Cancer Specialists.
An oncologist is a cancer doctor or someone who specializes in oncology. These doctors focus on diagnosing, staging, and treating cancer.
Oncologists run tests to diagnose cancer, offer a second opinion on a previous diagnosis, identify treatment options, discuss side effects, oversee your treatment, and manage your care post-treatment.
There are many different subcategories of oncologists, including surgical, medical, radiation, gynecologic, pediatric, and neurological.
Our oncologists at PCSRI are also there to help you cope with any of the stress or anxiety that comes along with cancer and treatment.
A hematologist is a medical specialist who focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing blood disorders.
Hematologists work with blood diseases that are both non-cancerous and cancerous, which means that hematologists may also be oncologists.
Hematologists can treat common non-cancerous blood disorders such as anemia, von willebrand disease, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, and thalassemias. Common blood cancers that hematologists treat are leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.
Hematologists perform physical exams, order blood tests, and recommend treatments for blood disorders.
There are many different types of physicians, and at PCSRI, we value all of them. If you have any questions about what kind of doctor you need, contact our team; we’ll be here to help!
