You’re Allowed to Be Tired

Have you ever felt guilty about needing rest during cancer treatment? You are not alone, and it is completely normal to feel this way. Fatigue is a common but often overlooked side effect of treatment. Allowing yourself to rest is not a sign of giving up. It is an important part of healing.

Fatigue from cancer is not the same as being tired after a busy day. It can feel much deeper, last longer, and may not go away with sleep. This tiredness can be caused by treatment, changes in your body, poor sleep, stress, or the challenges you are facing. Knowing that this fatigue has real physical causes can help you be more gentle with yourself.

It can help to let go of the pressure to feel or act like you usually do. You might need to say no to visitors when you are tired, ask someone else to help with chores, or take a nap during the day without feeling bad about it. Rest is not laziness. While you are in treatment, resting is one of the best things you can do for your body. Our team is also always there to support you.

When you have a bit of energy, gentle movement can help lessen fatigue over time. Whether that’s around the block, enjoying the fresh air, or throughout the house, taking short walks, doing some light stretching, or just sitting outside for a few minutes can boost your circulation and mood without making you more tired. The most important thing is to listen to your body and choose activities that help you feel better, not more worn out.

Eating well also helps you manage your energy. By having small, balanced meals throughout the day to keep your blood sugar steady and give your body steady fuel. Even if you do not feel hungry, staying hydrated helps every part of your body as it works to heal.

Most importantly, talk to your care team about how you are feeling. You do not have to deal with fatigue on your own. Your doctors and nurses can help determine what is causing it, adjust your treatment if needed, and connect you with additional support. You do not need to hide your feelings to appear strong. Being honest helps your team support you best. At Pennsylvania Cancer Specialists and Research Institute, our team is here to support you through every part of your treatment.
